Practical Seasteading: How to paint a faux bronze patina onto concrete

Also published at: Substack

I'm making some seastead models. As part of the modelmaking, I needed to make a bronze patina on concrete.

Most of the information for this technique came from Rubber Mold Man, "Let's Paint A Statue - Ep. 7, Patina Finish"

Materials

Paint

  1. All paints should be flat acrylic exterior latex paints

  2. Cheap paint will work fine.

  3. Metallic paints fade fast initially.

  4. Silver metallic paint doesn't generally create a nice patina.

  5. Small amounts of exterior paints are available at craft stores like Hobby Lobby

  6. Colors:
    black
    forest green
metallic gold / bronze / copper

Chip brush
Work table
Bucket of clean water

Method

Base coat:

  1. Wet the concrete.

  2. Thin the paint with water. This will help the paint penetrate into the cement.

  3. Paint the concrete in thin layers with a chip brush.

Second layer:

  1. Once the base layer has dried somewhat, paint a second layer with forest green. Dab the brush into the crevices, rather than paint with broad strokes.

Third Layer

  1. Put a small dab of metallic paint on cardboard pallet. Load up brush with very little paint.

  2. Dust the highlights with the metallic paint. Pretend you're dusting it off with

  3. Spray coat with clear glossy enamel spray
