Zcash is one of the few cryptocurrencies where privacy is a genuine technical property rather than a marketing claim. But acquiring it privately is harder than it should be, because every major regulated exchange will demand your name, address, and government ID before letting you touch a single ZEC. This guide covers several methods for acquiring Zcash without submitting your information to an exchange database.
If you want the full argument for why KYC/AML requirements are dangerous and why you should care about financial privacy, read How to buy Monero with cash by mail first. The reasoning applies equally here.
Zcash is only private if you use it that way
Before discussing acquisition, one critical point: Zcash has two address types, and only one of them is private.
Transparent addresses (t-addresses) work exactly like Bitcoin. Every transaction – sender, receiver, and amount – is visible on a public blockchain. Receiving Zcash to a t-address means your balance and transaction history are public, defeating the purpose entirely.
Shielded addresses (z-addresses) use zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs) to hide the sender, receiver, and amount. This is the privacy layer that makes Zcash meaningful.
Many exchanges, wallets, and services default to transparent addresses. When you receive Zcash, verify that your wallet is using a z-address (they begin with u1 or zs1 depending on the protocol version). If it starts with t1, you are receiving to a transparent address.
Recommended wallets that default to shielded transactions:
- Zodl – official wallet from Zcash Open Development Lab (formerly Zashi/ECC), shielded by default
- Nighthawk – mobile wallet, shielded support
Avoid any exchange or wallet that only gives you a t-address.
Method 1: Buy on Bisq with cash by mail
Bisq is a decentralized peer-to-peer exchange that requires no account, no identity verification, and no central server. It supports ZEC/BTC and ZEC/fiat trading pairs. Sellers list their preferred payment methods, which can include cash by mail, Zelle, bank transfer, and others.
Cash by mail is the most private option. The seller gets an envelope of cash; you get ZEC. Neither party needs to reveal more than a mailing address.
The general process for cash by mail on Bisq:
Download and install Bisq. It runs as a desktop application and connects over Tor by default.
Fund a small Bisq security deposit in BTC. This is required by the protocol to prevent fraud on both sides.
Browse ZEC/USD or ZEC/BTC offers and find a seller who accepts cash by mail. Check the seller’s trade history and dispute rate before committing.
Open a trade. Bisq generates an escrow that holds the seller’s ZEC until payment is confirmed.
Package and send cash as described in the Materials and Methods sections below. Communicate the tracking number to the seller through Bisq’s encrypted chat.
Once the seller confirms receipt, they release the ZEC from escrow to your shielded z-address.
Method 2: Swap from Monero via Cake Wallet
If you already hold Monero, the cleanest no-KYC path to shielded ZEC is a direct in-wallet swap using Cake Wallet. In January 2026, Cake Wallet added shielded Zcash support powered by NEAR Intents, enabling XMR -> ZEC swaps that land directly in a shielded z-address – no third-party account, no KYC, no intermediate step.
NEAR Intents routes the swap through competing market makers and selects the best rate automatically. Over $1.5 billion in cumulative ZEC volume has been processed through NEAR Intents, so liquidity is not a concern for typical trade sizes.
The flow:
- Install Cake Wallet on iOS or Android.
- Fund it with XMR acquired privately (see How to buy Monero with cash by mail).
- Use the in-wallet swap to exchange XMR for ZEC. Cake Wallet defaults to a shielded receiving address.
- Verify the destination is a z-address before confirming.
This is currently the most direct and private route from fiat to shielded ZEC: buy XMR with cash by mail, then swap in-wallet with no additional identity exposure.
For BTC holders, ChangeNOW offers BTC -> ZEC swaps without account creation for standard amounts. Always send to a shielded z-address when receiving.
Method 3: Vexl
Vexl is a mobile app for peer-to-peer Bitcoin trades using your existing social network as the trust layer. Instead of relying on a reputation score from strangers, Vexl shows you offers from your phone contacts and their contacts – people one or two degrees removed from you. No account, no KYC, no central order book.
The typical flow:
Install Vexl on iOS or Android. The app asks for your phone number to map your contact graph; it does not share your contact list with any server.
Browse buy/sell offers from people in your network. You can also post your own offer specifying amount, price, and preferred payment method (cash in person, bank transfer, etc.).
Agree on terms and meet to complete the trade, or settle via your chosen payment method. BTC is released from escrow once both parties confirm.
Swap the BTC for ZEC via ChangeNOW, sending the ZEC to a shielded z-address.
Vexl’s social trust model makes it well suited for smaller, local trades where you want to deal with people who have a real-world connection to you rather than anonymous counterparties. The two-step BTC -> ZEC swap adds a small fee but preserves the no-KYC property end-to-end.
Method 4: Bitcoin ATM
Many Bitcoin ATMs accept cash and dispense BTC with no KYC for amounts under a threshold (typically $900 or less). You can then swap the BTC for ZEC on ChangeNOW. Fees are high compared to other methods, but the process is fast and requires no internet identity.
Use CoinATMRadar to find ATMs near you. Check the fee before inserting cash – some ATMs charge 15-25%.
Method 5: Mine it
Mining ZEC requires hardware and electricity costs, but produces coins with no KYC trail. Zcash uses the Equihash proof-of-work algorithm. GPU mining is viable with Nvidia cards. Solo mining at small scale is unlikely to yield consistent returns; joining a mining pool increases predictability, though the pool operator will have your wallet address and hash rate.
Warnings
Buying privately takes more effort than using a regulated exchange. No single step is technically complex, but there is a learning curve, and the risks are real:
- A fraudulent seller could claim your cash arrived empty or never arrived.
- Cash sent through the mail can be lost or stolen in transit.
- Postal inspectors may detect cash in an envelope and seize it under asset forfeiture laws. You would then have to sue and prove the money was legally acquired.
- No-KYC swap services can be shut down or exit without notice. Do not leave funds on any service longer than necessary.
- Zcash shielding is only as strong as your wallet software. Verify your receiving address is a z-address before every transaction.
Steps to reduce your risk on cash-by-mail trades:
- Only trade with sellers who have a substantial history of completed trades on Bisq and a high satisfaction rate.
- Start with small amounts to establish trust before sending large sums.
- Send via USPS Priority Mail Express with tracking and signature confirmation. This gives you proof of delivery if a dispute arises.
- Film yourself packaging the cash in a single unbroken take. This is your primary evidence if the seller claims the envelope was empty.
Materials (for cash by mail)
- Sharpie marker, Ultra Fine point or an inkjet/laser printer for shipping labels.
- Shipping labels, 4 x 6 for both inner and outer envelope.
- Tamper-resistant cash bag, 6 x 9 inch – once sealed, cannot be reopened without visible damage.
- Mylar bag, 5.5 x 7.8 inch, resealable – inner envelope; helps mask the smell of cash and protects against water damage.
- USPS Priority Mail Padded Flat Rate Envelope, 9.5 x 12.5 inch – outer envelope.
- Video camera. A phone camera works fine.
- Flexible phone holder and a lamp to keep the shot stable and well-lit.
- Drimark counterfeit detector pen
Methods
Set up a Bisq account and find a ZEC seller who accepts cash by mail. Agree on an amount and open a trade.
Note your Bisq username and trade ID. Write both on the tamper-resistant bag and mylar bag. This ties your specific package to your trade and helps counter man-in-the-middle attacks.
Find the full USPS addresses (including Zip+4) for both your return address and the seller’s address. Use USPS address lookup. Format them to look like a routine business mailing:
AMOS BURTON 10 CUSTOM HOUSE AVE BALTIMORE MD 21202-3259
Print or write shipping labels for both the inner mylar bag and the outer envelope.
Test the bills you are sending using the counterfeit detection steps in the section below. Perform the security thread and pen tests on camera.
Lay all materials out on a table under good lighting. Set up your camera so that all materials are clearly visible.
Start recording. Do not stop the camera until the outer envelope is fully sealed.
Affix shipping labels to both the inner bag and outer envelope.
Hold the bills up to the camera so that the serial numbers are legible.
With the Sharpie, make unique markings on the interior surfaces of both envelopes – a signature, a pattern, anything distinctive. This lets a Bisq dispute mediator verify whether the seller opened your actual package or a substitute.
Place the cash in the tamper-resistant bag and seal it.
Place the tamper-resistant bag in the mylar bag and seal it.
Place the mylar bag in the USPS envelope and seal it.
Purchase Priority Mail postage with cash at a USPS location if possible.
Mail the envelope. Share the tracking number with the seller through Bisq’s encrypted trade chat.
Once the seller confirms receipt, they release the ZEC from escrow. Verify it arrives in your shielded z-address.
How to tell if a $100 bill is real
Security threads. Hold the bill up to the light. In a $100 bill, there should be a clear embedded thread running vertically to the left of Ben Franklin, imprinted with “USA 100”. It glows pink/orange under UV light. Each denomination glows a different color.
Color-shifting ink. The numeral “100” in the lower right corner of the front shifts from copper to green as you tilt the bill.
Watermark. Hold the bill to the light. A faint image of Ben Franklin should be visible in the blank space to the right, visible from both sides.
Paper. Real currency is 25% linen and 75% cotton. The counterfeit detector pen leaves no mark on real currency; it turns black on wood-pulp printer paper.
Size. All US bills are 2.61 x 6.14 inches and weigh exactly 1 gram.
Microprinting. With a magnifying glass, look for “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” on Ben Franklin’s collar and “USA 100” around the watermark area.
3D ribbon. The blue ribbon woven through the front of the note (introduced in the 2013 series) should show “bells” and “100”s that move in the opposite direction from the tilt of the bill.
Notes
If you have ZEC already, you can use it to buy postage privately from CryptoStamps.
Bisq trades are backed by a dispute resolution process involving arbitrators. Keep records of every step – tracking numbers, screenshots of trade chat, and your packaging video – so you can prevail in a dispute.
The no-KYC swap services (SideShift, ChangeNOW) have daily limits. For larger amounts, use multiple trades over multiple days rather than trying to move a large sum at once.
If you already have Monero, the XMR -> ZEC swap path is often the most convenient and private. See How to buy Monero with cash by mail for details on acquiring Monero privately.
