I know I've been critical of Obama, so let me give credit where credit is due. Whereas he once opposed gay marriage, Obama now publicly supports the right of gays to marry. Where once gays were barred from serving in the military openly, Obama signed into law a bill repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Obama has also signed into law bills extending many of the same government benefits and legal protections to gay people as those enjoyed by heterosexuals. These are great victories, and I applaud all those who helped make them happen, including Obama.

Obama also generally supports a woman's right to choose an abortion, as well as other medical choices involving the reproductive system. It's unlikely that anyone in the Obama administration will make boneheaded comments about what constitutes "legitimate" rape. It's also unlikely that the Obama administration will pursue obscenity cases, nor attempt to break down the barriers between church and state. For all of these virtues, I'm grateful.

My thanks especially to those of you who have been in the front lines in the fights for these civil liberties. It has no doubt been costly to you, in time, energy, and emotional pain. Your sacrifices are much appreciated by me. I look forward to a time when love can find it's expression in whatever form consenting adults choose to adopt.
