Facebook doesn't allow you to send more than 500 invites to a private event. If you try to send more, they pop up a very scoldy message that says "Next time invite only people you personally know." and suggests buying ads from them or posting to my timeline. Their FAQ says this policy is in place to reduce spam complaints.
Here's my response:
"I have a large friend's group (1000+) that I would like to invite to private events. Since these events are invite-only, creating a (public) ad or posting to my (public) time line is an unacceptable solution.
If people think they're getting spammed, isn't the proper solution to drop me from their friend's list, and/or let me know their feelings? After all, they voluntarily chose to friend me. Also, if spamming my friend's list is wrong, what makes it acceptable to do it in the form of a paid ad?
In any case, I would be willing to pay a fee to compensate you for handling the increased spam notices I may theoretically incur."
