# Kill six million Jews, and you're the epitome of evil.  Kill 16-45…

Kill six million Jews, and you\'re the epitome of evil. Kill 16-45 million Chinese people, and\...nothing? Why are there so few portrayals of the Great Leap Forward?\

One hypothesis is that people of Jewish ethnicity are common in culture producing industries (books, movies, TV). And since Jews have direct, personal experience of the Holocaust, that\'s what they write about.\
\
Chinese people are not nearly so engrained in culture producing professions in the U.S. So their Holocaust remains largely untold.\
\
If we hadn\'t banned Chinese people from immigrating from the 1890\'s to the present, would artists have cared more?\
\
More darkly, another hypothesis is that many creative people during the Great Leap Forward were themselves Communists or Communist sympathizers. And writers/entertainers continue to be disproportionately enthusiastic for less virulent strains of socialism into the present. So perhaps their unwillingness to portray the Chinese Holocaust reflects their discomfort with illustrating the ill-effects of an ideology quite similar to their own.
