Did you know that 35 states have "Certificate of Need" laws? This means that new hospitals must get permission to build ("prove need") from existing hospitals. Needless to say, existing hospitals aren't too keen on permitting new competition, so states with CON laws tend to see slower growth in the supply of hospital beds and services.
