# The standard for all comments on my Facebook page: treat all…

*November 15, 2016 · Facebook*

::: {}
The standard for all comments on my Facebook page: treat all commentators with kindness, courtesy, and respect. Assume good will. Try to back up your assertions with logical arguments and unbiased sources.\
\
Comments which fail to follow the \"kindness, courtesy, and respect\" guideline may be deleted. Note that this rule applies even if others in the conversation are also behaving poorly.\
\
Sometimes I don\'t want to spend a lot of time moderating or foster a flame war. Or I may want to solicit comments from people who might fear they will be lambasted or drawn into a flame war.\
\
If that\'s the case, I may say \"Arguments and/or inflammatory comments will be deleted.\"\
\
Here\'s what this statement means to me:\
\
No arguments. Do not attempt to persuade others that their view is wrong, or yours is right. Do not question others definitions, motivations, or morality. Do not question the scope of the post (or lack thereof). No arguments about the \"no arguments\" rule either.\
\
No inflammatory comments. Do not attack others views or comments in any way. Do not make any comments or ask any questions that suggests that anyone else, or their position is evil, immoral, or mistaken. No name-calling. No insinuations. No expressions of incredulity at other\'s ignorance, malice, stupidity, or \"privilege\". Do not attack other people\'s credibility.\
\
The two rules apply regardless of who the arguments or inflammatory comments are directed at, including people who are not involved in the conversation.\
\
A good rule of thumb: if a comment or question you\'re contemplating would make you feel angry or defensive if it were said to you (or about you) it is almost certainly either argumentative or inflammatory.
