I would like to feel cheerful and upbeat as much as I can. But failing that, when I am feeling down, I would like to continue to be a source of good feelings to those around me. Or at least _not_ a source of bad feelings.

However, if I'm feeling down (or anxious, or cynical) acting cheerful and upbeat feels dishonest.

I notice that certain friends act cheerful and upbeat most of the time. I'm sure that, like everyone else, they suffer their share of wounds from the slings and arrows of fate. When one of fate's arrows lodges in their back, do they simply act upbeat nonetheless? Or have they found ways to honestly feel upbeat, even in the face of adversity?

If it is simply an act, is it dishonest to act happy, even if you don't feel that way internally? And if it is dishonest, is it nonetheless the right thing to do?
