Unlike quitting smoking, stopping climate change (sharply increasing carbon taxes, sharply decreasing meat/dairy production, instituting high efficiency standards, etc) will be quite costly. Trillions of dollars, even according to supporters who favor the measures (and are therefore biased toward lower numbers). Climate change would also not wholly negative\--warming climate, high CO2 levels should be mean much better farming and plant growth in much of the world. Addressing the ill effects of climate change may well be less costly than trying to stop climate change altogether.
