For most monogamous hetero guys, there's a hierarchy of commitment, that goes something like this:
1. platonic friend (may be attracted, but can't/won't act on it for some reason)
2. one-night stand (but hide it from their friends).
3. one-night stand (but doesn't hide it)
4. friends-with-benefits, non-exclusive
5. date exclusively for 1 - 6 months
6. date exclusively for 6 - 18 months
7. date exclusively indefinitely, won't marry, no kids
7.1 date exclusively indefinitely, won't marry, yes kids
8. marry, no kids
8.1 marry, yes kids
