Help me find the winner of the Media Lab Disobedience Award, and we could both attend the award ceremony in July.
Just submitted my vote for Ross Ulbricht, founder of the Silk Road. @[544700762:2048:Judd Weiss] perhaps you would be interested in signal boosting this? Here's what I wrote:
"Ross Ulbricht, founder of the Silk Road, deserves the award. At great personal risk, he pioneered the use of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin to create a semi-anonymous online drug market. In doing so, he reduced the risk of violence, improved drug quality, increased drug access, and demonstrated the first practical use of cryptocurrencies. Ulbricht's trial was a travesty (among other things, the cops investigating him embezzled the Bitcoin they captured from him), and there's a good chance his conviction will be overturned on appeal. However, lawyer's are expensive, so he can use all the money he can get. It's hard to think of a government policy that causes as much harm as the government's War on Drugs, and Ulbricht struck a powerful blow against it--he deserves our support."
