Personally, I find the Juicero aesthetically repulsive (I much prefer whole pulp, dislike single use appliances, and dislike lockin/proprietary supplies). However, logically, I understand why investors thought this product would be a hit\--Keurig coffee makers have been a huge success.\
\
But whatever Juicero\'s fate, it illustrates an important reason why I prefer markets to mandates. No one was forced to invest in Juicero. If Juicero fails, only people who chose to be involved will lose money. Make enough similarly bad decisions, and the company\'s investors will go bankrupt.\
\
If Juicero were a federal government program however, every taxpayer would be forced to subsidize the losses. The only way to legally opt out would be to move out of the country and renounce one\'s citizenship. None of the decision makers would lose money or lose their jobs. Indeed, they would complain that their program failed not because it was a terrible idea, implemented by people with awful incentives, but because it was \"underfunded\" and demand \_more\_ money to throw into the pit.\
