Thoughts on longterm photo and video storage?\
\
As can be seen from the older family photos I\'ve uploaded, physical photos\--even when stored under reasonable conditions\--degrade quite a bit over time. They\'re also at risk of fire, flood, vermin, theft, and forgetfulness. Digital photos are also at risk of being lost due to drive failure, obsolete file/media formats, and so on.\
\
So far, the best solution I\'ve found is uploading them to [archive.org.](http://archive.org.){target="_blank"} Their intention \"\...is to store and make materials \[available\] in perpetuity.\" They keep redundant backups, and they\'re more likely to keep up with changes in file formats. They don\'t currently charge money (they say it costs them about \$2/GB of data).\
\
Anyone have thoughts on potential downsides? Alternatives?
