A few comparative statistics. Note that these stats don't include deaths from war.

El Salvador's murder rate (109 per 100,000) is about 20 times higher than the US murder rate (5 per 100,000) which is about 20 times higher than the murder rate in Singapore (0.25 per 100,000). (2) El Salvador's murder rate is the world's highest, and Singapore's murder rate is the lowest (excluding micronations like Lichtenstein).

St. Louis, Missouri has the highest murder rate in the US (59 per 100,000) vs Caracas, Venezuela (130 per 100,000), which has the highest in the world. (1, 4)

Port-au-Prince, Haiti has a murder rate of about 61 per 100,000. (5). So, at least based on murder rate, St. Louis, Missouri is a shithole of similar magnitude to Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

New Orleans, LA has a murder rate of 45 per 100,000, which is comparable to the murder rate for Honduras overall (43 per 100,000) (2,6)

In the US, about as many people die in fires (5 per 100,000) as will be murdered. Car accidents kill 19 per 100,000. (3) Murder causes 0.5% of all deaths in the U.S. (5 out of 916).
