Of the decentralized projects I\'m aware of, the Althea mesh network is the most promising. It\'s an incentivized mesh network of COTS routers. They have working prototype hardware and code, and a prototype networks in Clatskanie, Oregon and Medellin, Colombia. The current goal is a layer 2 network, but the long term goal is to have their own decentralized backhaul.\

I particularly like the Althea networks decentralized governance model. By design, no single company or organization controls the network.
