A friend recently took offense at the suggestion that being anti-immigrant was akin to being racist.\
\
In a world without racism, black people would be able to freely associate, trade, and live where they please regardless of their skin color. Their private property rights and contracts would be respected. Employers would be able to legally hire them without penalty or restriction.\
\
They would be punished only when they committed violence against someone else, and only after a proper trial.\
\
They would not be kidnapped, caged, or threatened based on what they \_might\_ do, based on the statistical properties of their racial group.\
\
For example, in a world without racism, if a woman decided to date a black man, her neighbors wouldn\'t be allowed to threaten her or her lover with violence because they were afraid of the crimes the black man \_might\_ commit, or how he might vote in future elections, or how dumb their children might be.\
\
To suggest the world should be otherwise, seems racist to me.\
\
And, to my mind, the essential moral logic above doesn\'t change if you substitute \"Mexican\" for \"black.
