I like what Secure Scuttlebutt is doing. It was originally created (and continues to be developed) by a guy living on a sailboat in New Zealand, so it's optimized for low-bandwidth, offline use first. It use a P2P gossip distribution model, so you only see the posts of people you subscribe to, and you have control over whether you forward their posts or not. So, if someone starts behaving obnoxiously, they quickly find their reach limited.

On the other hand, as there's no central authority, no one can censor you from reaching the people who want to hear your message.

This is a nice summary of its design and features:

The downsides:

1) Unless you already know people using Scuttlebutt, it's difficult to know where to start to get to know people. The strategy I followed was to join as many pub servers as I could, and try to follow anyone who seemed to have common interests.

2) There's not really a concept of a private group yet (though they're working on it), and it can be hard to tell the likely reach of your posts.

3) Just like real gossip, there's currently no way to delete something, once said. (You can delete it from your local database, but that doesn't delete it from anyone else.)
