Tulsi Gabbard is not my ideal candidate. Among other things, she supports:
* restoring the Glass-Steagall Act
* making college tuition free for anyone making under $125 K/year
* Green New Deal
* assault weapons ban and mandatory background check (F rating from the NRA)
* universal healthcare
* online gambling regulations
In other words, on economic issues, she's a mainstream Democrat.
However, she also supports:
* ending the wars in the Middle East (and not starting new ones)
* ending the drug war (B+ rating from NORML)
* sex work decriminalization
* LGBTQ+ rights (100% record in Congress for pro-LGBT legislation from the Human Rights Campaign)
* criminal justice reform
* reproductive rights (100% voting record with both Planned Parenthood and NARAL)
* ending the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia
* pardoning Snowden, and dropping charges against Assange
Unlike many of the Democratic frontrunners, she a) seems to truly care about (most) civil rights b) supports ending the wars in the Middle East (and not starting new ones) c) is not a hypocrite, and speaks out against bad policy even when it is pursued by her fellow Democrats.
Since I think the War on Drugs and the War on Terrorism have been the most damaging government policies of the last half century, I would like to see a President who will work to end them.
