Suppose you were born in a place where evil morons control most institutions of power. Nazi Germany, say. Or the Soviet Union. And suppose you want to live the happiest, most moral life you can.

In such a society, if you cater to the biases of the evil morons (such as by joining Communist party), you will likely gain wealth and power. If you fail to join, you will likely suffer poverty and lack of status. And if you actively fight back, you and your family will be killed.

Are there any good treatises on how best to live in such an environment? When is it best to work within an apparatus of power and try to reform it peacefully versus publicly attack it from the outside? When is it best to become a guerilla fighter vs attempting peaceful, civil resistance? When should you make an effort to speak up when other people spout evil nonsense versus blandly smile and nod.
