"This is the single most important piece of news I've seen this week. A key part of the solution is in hand.

It seems vital that we find ways to support and empower this team as they navigate the regulatory process.

It sounds like nothing but the FDA and the CDC stands between us and having fast, accurate, and safe Covid-19 tests and vaccines for large swaths of the country.

Check out this great interview with Lou Reese and Mei Mei Hu, Co-CEOs at United Biomedical as they discuss their work on COVID-19. This is the couple that paid for their entire county in Colorado to be tested for free. I highly recommend watching. As far as I am concerned, smart people in the private sector have already solved this problem and it's just a matter of implementation and overcoming institutional inflexibility.

They have developed one of the best and most accurate testing platforms (100% accurate after seroconversion) available right now that can test a whole population and differentiate between people who have already had it and recovered, people who are currently infected and those who haven't been infected yet. This allows those who've already built immunity to go back to work, those who are currently infected to isolate and get treatment, and those who haven't been exposed yet to take proper precautions. This approach is currently the gold standard for mitigating the impact of this virus.

They also have five solid vaccine candidates ready for human testing and could produce at scale immediately if regulatory laws were able to be changed. By August at the latest with current regulations.

I've been in touch with United Biomedical and Boulder County Public Health, trying to convince Boulder County to offer free testing for the entire population and find potential donors. The cost would be around 7 million dollars. The company has told me that they would focus their entire production capacity to test Boulder County if we were able to proceed. Boulder County Public Health is considering the option but I have been facing some resistance.

This would be one of the most high-leverage moves that any locality could make at this point in time to handle this situation in a positive way. Following the lead of places like Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan who have done a great job of handling it. and Avoiding what's happening in Italy, New York, and what's about to happen in New Orleans and many other cities in the US.

If others are inspired by this approach, know that we might need help in making this happen. And know that if it fails, at least some of us tried our best to make this happen in a timely fashion. We are in a critical time window where doing this sooner rather than later would make a big difference.
