One thing I've started doing recently is introduce myself online to people who I admire. After I read a book or article I enjoy, I'll often friend the author on FB and send a brief note explaining why. Something like this:
"I don't know if we've ever met in person, but I'm a fan of your writing / advocacy work (most recently, your essay [INSERT ESSAY]). Would like to stay in touch, if you're so inclined."
As a rule, I'll friend them if they meet the following criteria:
* pro-liberty
* intelligent
* courteous
* sense of humor
* uncommon viewpoint or expertise (cryonics, seasteading, 3-d printed guns, sex work, drugs, permaculture, cryptocurrency, etc)
I figure that if I enjoy their writing, they'll probably enjoy a lot of things I post.
So far, most of the people I reach out to have been responsive, and friended me back.
Does anyone else do this? What are your rules for reaching out to people you admire?
If any of y'all know of folks who you think would click with me, please feel free to point them my way.
