"In the past two decades, agents of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seized at least $2 billion in currency at airports. And the most common reason money was seized wasn’t sparked by charges of money laundering or drug smuggling; it was because travelers failed to fill out the right form. Flying into the country, travelers are given a customs declaration form that asks if they are entering the U.S. with $10,000 or more. Travelers leaving the U.S. are similarly required to fill out FinCEN Form 105 with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before flying. Yet there are no signs at security screening warning travelers of this obligation.

Anthonia Nwaorie, a Nigerian-American nurse, found this out the hard way. She was flying to her native country to open a free medical clinic for women and children. The more than $40,000 she had raised and saved up to make this dream possible was seized at the Houston International Airport in October 2017. After she passed through security screening, she was confronted on the jetway by CBP officers. Because she had not filled out the form, the officers seized all her money."
