This helps me articulate why viral signaling bothers me. Previously, I couldn't articulate why I find expressions of "solidarity" creepy, such as blacking out one's profile photo (or turning it rainbow colored, etc) or limning it with some message (even one I like, such as "End qualified immunity.")
If everyone else is posting such signaling, then the fact that you're not becomes conspicuous. You can then be targeted for blackballing, browbeating, and harassment until you fall inline with everyone else.
