"And yet again, you're glossing over the fact that there was a massive attempt to stop the presidential electoral count certification at the moment it was happening, which is why this goes far beyond a random right-winger's freedom of expression of his opinion. That is not in the same league as BLM (which you roundly criticized and mocked, as I recall.)"

Yes, the January 6 protests are not in the same league as the BLM riots. The BLM riots caused billions of dollars worth of damage over months. BLM protesters attacked police stations, Federal buildings, and hundreds of businesses. Multiple deaths (at least 19), and many injuries. The BLM protests were far _worse_.
Did 500 or so yahoos occupy the Capitol Building (out of a crowd of 250 - 300 K people)? Did the protesters disrupt the electoral count for a few hours? Yes.
But anti-Kavanaugh protesters also temporarily disrupted his confirmation hearings for several hours. Did you speak up then?
Yes, two people died, a protester and police officer. But six people died in the CHAZ occupation, which involved far fewer people. Did you speak up then?
_You said nothing_, as far as I can tell. You let people like me take the heat from our peer group for speaking up against the violence.
You also act as if this was a serious coup attempt, rather than a "mostly peaceful" protest that got out of hand.
Do you think that Republicans don't know how to work guns? Start fires? Set off explosives? A serious coup attempt would've been far more deadly. Timothy McVeigh alone killed 168 people. What do you think 250 - 300 K similarly motivated people could've done?
And who exactly would've backed a coup? The military? The civil service? DC police? The media? Universities? The judiciary? Congress? There was no support for a coup by any major institution.
Therefore, the notion that this was serious insurrection attempt or a coup is absurd. It was instead, like the BLM protests, an expression of unhappiness with the operation of the government.
And, like the BLM violence, the occupation of the Capitol Building shouldn't have happened. It was pointless political theater, that accomplished nothing except inflame the left and give them an excuse to crackdown on the free speech rights of everyone. And I've previously condemned it, just as I condemned the BLM riots, for similar reasons:

But mark my words: while the DC protests were not an insurrection, if you and other leftists persist in trying to censor and suppress Trump's supporters--especially if you try to do so with the power of the state--you _will_ spark a true insurrection.
