Founded in 2003 by Gottfrid Svartholm, Fredrik Neij, and Peter Sunde, the Pirate Bay has long been the most popular site for finding bittorrent links to "pirated" music, movies, TV shows, and books.

As a result, The Pirate Bay is probably the most heavily attacked website in history.

Among the attacks include:

* multiple police raids on their hosting facilities
* multiple arrests, including the arrest of their defense attorney
* multiple lawsuits, resulting in 120 million Swedish kroner in fines; by 2052, Sunde will have the most debt in Swedish history (surpassing North Korea's 2 billion debt to Sweden)
* seizure of their domain names
* censorship at every level, from customer's ISP's to Internet backbone routers

Yet, despite the attacks, The Pirate Bay has stayed online continuously (more or less). They've used a variety of creative defenses, including:

* starting their own political party ("The Pirate Party") to advocate for end of copyright
* starting their own religion (Church of Kopimism) which holds copying to be a sacred rite
* running for EU parliament as a delegate from Finland so that they would have diplomatic immunity

I recommend that anyone with an interest in censorship resistance listen to the podcast here:
