This is why it's a bad idea to let law enforcement (police, military, etc) torture people, imprison people indefinitely, or seize their assets without a conviction even if you think the people being abused deserve it (terrorists, pedophiles, drug dealers, immigrants, etc).
Once such behavior is enculturated into the institution, the officers will have no compunction against doing the same to you or anyone else they deem the "enemy".
