I\'m seeing a lot of criticism of Alec Baldwin for not following safe gun handling technique.\
\
Obviously, there was a failure of safety protocols somewhere.\
\
However, I don\'t think it\'s reasonable to criticize him for not following standard gun safety protocols. Filmmaking often involves simulating experiences that you would be foolish to recreate in real life. After all, you\'re not normally supposed to jump a car across a canyon, free climb a sky scraper, or punch other people in the face.\
\
Yet filmmakers sometimes perform those stunts in order to create striking visual imagery. Likewise, I don\'t think it\'s reasonable to expect filmmakers to always follow normal gun handling protocols, any more than one would expect stunt drivers to always follow the normal safety rules of the road.\
\
Instead, there are other, more specialized rules that prop masters, actors, and directors are supposed to follow when handling firearms on set. The crew might be justifiably criticized for failure to follow these protocols.\
