Assuming he netted $5/hr, he was making $200/week.  You can save up $4000 in 20 weeks (assuming you work 40 hours / week).  If he was working 20 hours/week, it would take 40 weeks.  Add in gifts, and it seems plausible he was able to save up enough.  (Assuming he didn't pay for necessities, like food and shelter.)
