Paul C. Jeffries "I don’t think I’ve ever posted anything hostile to libertarians on Facebook" You just reposted a lengthy letter that accuses the current leadership of the Libertarian Party of being "a cult of rapists, pedophiles, neo-Confederates, and neo-Nazis". Imagine that I went to your wall, and posted a letter that accused you of being a rapist, neo-Nazi, child molestor without making an effort to verify whether it was true or not. Would you regard it as a friendly gesture? "maybe your point is the libertarian view can *never* win in the wider society because they only appeal to a minority genotype." My belief is that political proclivities are strongly influenced by genetic factors. In my view, there is no gene for libertarianism or progressivism, but there are genes which promote proclivities for those ideologies. For example, I suspect sensitivity to hypocrisy and logical consistency is influenced by genetics. In my personal experience, arguing against progressives (or conservatives) is like arguing against a brick wall. They appear unphased by blatant contradictions in their ideology, or flagrant hypocrisy in their actions. Which is what we would expect if they lacked the genetic proclivities for noticing and/or caring about hypocrisy or logical consistency. If it's true that libertarian beliefs result from sharing a minority genotype, then persuasion is going to be ineffective unless / until the libertarian genotype becomes the dominant one in society. Since that's unlikely to happen any time soon, then the next best strategy is to concentrate our forces such that we're the dominant force in a geographical area and become so well armed that trying to dominate us is not worth the effort. In the long run, we should try to expand our numbers as much as possible. As long as we remain small in number, we will always be at risk of being overwhelmed by the much larger group of authoritarians. If I'm wrong, then its still a good strategy, as a libertarian society could be used as an example for future persuasive efforts. Most people can't imagine their way out of a candy wrapper, and having concrete reforms that we can point to will help people see that it can work and that the scare tactics of authoritarians are just to keep them under their thumb. And yes, right now, we're too weak to flout Federal law with impunity, but if we become populous enough / powerful enough, then eventually we can either selectively ignore Federal law (as California did with cannabis) or secede entirely.
