Ben Tang See my response to Leslie above. I would also point out that thalidomide was on track to be approved in the US. Then, as now, pregnant women weren't typically included in clinical trials, for obvious reasons. Rats (the animal model used at the time) don't respond to thalidomide in the same way as humans. It's only because it was approved for human use in Europe earlier that it's teratogenic effects became known. So, FDA sluggishness accidentally prevented more thalidomide babies, not because they would've caught it in the testing done at the time. https://www.pnas.org/doi/pdf/10.1073/pnas.91.9.4082
