There are many plausible alternative cryptocurrencies to bitcoin as well.  It's very rare that the first iteration of a new technology is the one that becomes the dominant version.  (So rare, in fact, that I can't think of a single example.) IMO, bitcoin is going to continue to lose market share to  multiple competing currencies, each supported by different factions that prioritize different features (decentralization, privacy, regulatory compliance, energy consumption, programmability, etc.)
