Damjan Buying local can make sense, if the local region has a comparative advantage in the product. For example, if you're located in the Northwest, it's probably better to buy lumber locally, since there's nearby forest and lumber is expensive to ship. But no region has a comparative advantage in everything. Companies that offer the best value (quality/price) will be be located in other places. For example, growing potatoes in New York City is stupid, as the cost of land is exorbitant, and the growing conditions aren't ideal. Better to buy from from potato farmers in Idaho, which has cheap land, abundant water, and good growing conditions.
