Cody Bitcoin was intended to be used as a currency. And it was used as such for a while, until technical flaws made it impractical to use as a currency (slow, expensive, little privacy). IMO, 2nd generation coins like Monero solve a lot of those problems, and actually do what Bitcoin was intended to do. (Though they are still too hard to use.)
