Very few animals have such long infancy as humans. Most animals are basically fully operational shortly after birth. Humans, however, have unusually large brains. In order to pass through the birth canal, much of our brain development must happen outside of the womb. Therefore, infants need years of parental care before they're able to survive on their own. Therefore, parents who pair bond with each other are more likely to have children who survive to reproduce.
