" I take a profoundly dim view of arguments that what AI does is functionally indistinguishable from what humans do." I agree that the current iteration of AI doesn't do what humans do.  Heck, we don't even fully understand what humans do, let alone reproduce our manner of thinking in software. That said, even though they don't operate the same way human brains work, AI's are able to create works that a blinded observer would struggle to differentiate from human output. It's akin to flight--airplanes don't fly the same way birds fly.  But airplanes do fly.
