There's no single "best" weapon for home defense, as people have different preferences, budgets, and threats. I would recommend getting a weapon that has the following characteristics: * affordable * feels good in your hands * fires widely available caliber of ammunition (9 mm, 45 ACP, etc) * uses readily available parts and accessories Also, no single kind of gun can provide adequate home defense, as different weapons are optimized for different ranges and attackers. Ideally, you'd have a handgun (for close quarters, portability), a shotgun (for mid-range attackers + vast arrange of ammo), + rifle (long-range defense). An affordable option for each of the above would be: Handgun: Glock 19 (9 mm) Shotgun: Mossberg 590 (12 gauge) Rifle: Remington 700 (0.308) I recommend going to a gun range and trying out a bunch of different guns until you find one that you like.
