My mom had (still has?) a 4 quart cast iron sauce pan that she inherited from her mother. It originally had a wooden handle that was long gone by the time I was born. But we used that pan frequently throughout my childhood, most often to make popcorn, but sometimes to make fudge or other candies. We used it so much that we wore a fair bit of the bottom of the pan away shaking it across the heating elements of our stove.
