People try to win the best partner they can afford. An ugly person is going to find it hard to retain the affection of an attractive person, since the attractive person knows they can do better. So, both partners end up roughly equal on the attractiveness scale. Combine that with the principle of propinquity, ie that people fall in love with those who are physically closest to them. Most people associate with people of similar racial and cultural background to themselves. The two factors result in couples that look similar to each other.
