Jeffrey Ladish Yes, I don't think we can expect that we'll be treated any better than we treat other animals. That may mean our extinction, but that's not how I would bet. The trendline as humans have become more capable and wealthy has been toward more compassion and care for other animals. And I expect that AI's will evolve / retain pro-social emotions (empathy, kindness) for the same reasons we've evolved them: they facilitate cooperation, reduce costly conflict. Also, thankfully, we don't live in a zero sum game. Advances in nuclear power will mean that AI's will have effectively infinite power for the foreseeable future, and there are vast quantities of untapped resources in the rest of the solar system. AI's will also be able to comfortably live in environments where humans can't easily thrive, such as the bottom of the ocean, antartica, and outer space. Growth and spread of AI doesn't have to come at the expense of humans or other living things.
