Lucas Wiman While humans _can_ live without tongues, it's unpleasant to do so.  Imagine an alien race that evolved from Cymothoa which crash-lands on Earth.   Their native hosts can't survive Earth's environment, but the Cymothoans can genetically engineer humans to serve as hosts.  Humans who agree to be symbiotes lose their tongues, but gain [immortality | alien technical knowhow]
