"People are not commodities. A life partnership is not about dollars and cent. " I think if you and Eric were to divorce, you, like most divorced women with kids, would care very much about the dollars and cents you received from your ex-spouse.   IMO, it's also important to go through these kind of discussions at the beginning of a relationship, so that a) neither party feels like they're being treated unjustly and b) if/when divorce occurs, the split can conducted amicably and fairly.
