It was cringey at the time. One of the tensions of the film was whether Leon, a lonely, developmentally stunted hitman, would succumb to the temptation of forbidden sex with an abused/neglected 12 year old girl.  He ultimately demonstrated his moral core by repeatedly rebuffing her inappropriate advances, and demonstrated true love for her by sacrificing himself for her.
