Brett Cashman Tensile strength is important if the vessel undergoes depth, temperature changes, especially rapidly. For example, a bathysphere will be compressed as it descends into the water. When the bathysphere rises, the pressures will reverse, and the interior air will press against the concrete walls putting them under tensile forces. Same for an underwater glider.
