In hindsight, not buying the winning lottery ticket seems pretty foolish too.  Most prior new money projects failed and were worth nothing.  (Remember Beanz? Flooz? e-cash?)  Buying those pizzas helped establish a value other than zero, and showed that BTC could be used for commerce in principle.  Without those early purchases, BTC would likely have never got off the ground.
