Alexander Shulgin is one of the 20th centuries greatest neurochemists. Among other things, he re-discovered MDMA ("ecstasy") as well as hundreds of other psychedelics.
Less well known is the role played by his wife Ann Shulgin, a psychotherapist. Ann and their circle of friends personally tested many of the new psychedelics Shulgin invented.
Ann was also the first to experiment with MDMA-assisted psychotherapy. Such treatment has proven effective at treating PTSD in soldiers, couples counseling, and social anxiety reduction. Due to her efforts, and the heroic efforts of the non-profit MAPS, such therapy is poised to soon enter mainstream treatment:
