Paul Schilling Star Trek and Wall-E are fiction. If you look at the actual history of humanity, some have been worrying about long term technological unemployment since the Luddites. It's never happened--employment was at 3.7% in the US in 2019, just prior to the pandemic. We have pocket phones that exceed the capabilities of all NASA's computation, and with the advent of AI / VR, they will be hungry for computation for the foreseeable future. Our ambitions will increase--instead of vacationing to Europe, people will vacation on the moon. Instead of buying a houseboat, people will by seastead or a spacestead.
