If you're prone to binge, don't start watching the MAX show "Warrior". The plot will grab you from the start, and won't let go. Ah Sam, the central character, is a skilled martial artist who sails to 1870's San Francisco in search of his lost sister. From the moment he exits the boat, Ah Sam quickly becomes embroiled in the battles and political machinations between the tongs, politicians, cops, and labor unions who run the city.

Like "The Wire", "Warrior" does a great job of showing how the incentives of the key players drive their behavior--very few of the characters are wholly good or bad. All of the factions have their angels and their demons. "Banshee" show runner Jonathon Tropper is also the show runner for "Warrior". And like "Banshee", "Warrior" intersperses the political intrigue with fist fights, gun battles, and fights with bladed weapons of all kinds. (If you're squeamish about sex and violence, this probably isn't the show for you. )

In addition to Ah Sam, there's a rich cast of secondary characters. Chao, the arms dealer who sells weapons to all sides. Lee, the wet behind the ears Southern cop. Ah Toy, a Chinatown madam. No matter how minor, you care about them and feel scared when they're in trouble, and sad when they die.

IMO, one of the best shows on TV right now.

The third season premiered on June 29, 2023.
