Michael Michalchik Imagine I'm washed ashore on a deserted island with no other inhabitants. I can't be extorted because there is no one else there, right? Yet I still must work to provide food and shelter for myself or die. Now suppose other people arrive. Do I now have the right to force them to work for me? No. Ethically speaking, I still must work to supply myself with food and shelter. That they exist near me doesn't give me the right to force them to support me. And refusing to support me is not "extortion".
