I saw the movie, but have not read the book.  I think the box cover mischaracterized the movie (too lighthearted), but I didn't get the sense that the movie is intended to be uplifting.  Like Ol' Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows, I think it's intended to portray the arbitrariness of death, and foster appreciation for the time we have with the ones we love, as it may end at any time.
