Derek Tharp Deaths from all dog attacks are vanishingly rare, on the order of 50 per year. Given that there are ~80 million dogs in the US, the probability that your kid will be killed by any particular dog is almost zero. Even the probability that your kid will get a bite requiring hospitalization is on the order of 0.02%.
